Looking to stretch your ability?  Need challenge and incentive?  Want to improve your endurance and fitness level?

Rollerquest will host several ROLLERBLAZE heats throughout this season at BWI AIRPORT

(See skate schedule)

If you want to stretch yourself and improve your your speed, this is the night for you.  ROLLERBLAZE is Rollerquest's version of a mini-race series.  Heats are varied:  loops, 5K Sprints, Packs, 10K, hills.  You may have to skate the loop alone -or group up and pack skate it with people of like ability-- as fast as you can.  Although the atmosphere is welcoming and supportive, realize this is not a social skate, you may have to skate alone.  The skates will be an all out attack "against the clock"; we will be chasing the wind.  Be prepared to skate at your peak.  We will not wait for anyone, or anything, except at the finish line. ROLLERBLAZE is mostly about pushing your ability.  If you like to skate fast, for shorter distances, and want to incorporate some interval training, join us for the ROLLERBLAZE 5K sprints.  These are guaranteed to get your heart rate up!

How ROLLERBLAZE works:

ROLLERBLAZE participants will have the opportunity to skate in different  timed scenarios:  laps (heats) around BWI Airport Loop (10.62 miles) and 5K (3 mile) timed sprints on the path next to Dorsey Road, etc.  Points will be awarded to participants based on finishing time. The skater with the fastest loop or best heat will get 10 points, the skater with the second best time will be awarded 9 points, 3rd best--8 points and 4th best--7 points and so on.....  We will attempt to run, at least, 10--15 mixed heats, hopefully more, before the end of the skating season.

All participants (paying--prize competing--and non paying) are required to submit a liability release.  Helmets and wrist guards are required for all participants.  Rollerquest suggests that all skaters wear complete safety gear.   You do not have to pay to participate.  You may participate free of charge.  You must submit the entry fee to be eligible for a prize.  The entry fee is currently $25.00 and must be submitted to either Larry or Irene by your third ROLLERBLAZE heat.  For example, if you start in heat one -- and attend heats 2&3 you must submit your monies by the third heat.  If you attend heat 2, then heat 5, then heat 7 -- and you want to compete for a prize you must submit your funds by the end of heat 7.  In other words, all funds must be submitted by the end of YOUR third participating heat.

At the end of the ROLLERBLAZE season, prizes will be awarded to the three prize competing skaters with the most points. If there is a enough participation there will be separate prizes for men and women.  If not, prizes will be combined, based on total points.  The value of the prize will be determined by the number of paying participants, the calculated entry fee (currently $25.00) and donations received.  The entry fee is a seasonal, one time fee, and will make you eligible for a prize.   You have the option to participate for a prize or to skate for fun.  Anyone skating for a prize must pay the entry fee by your third participating skate.   If you want to skate "for time only", without contributing any money, you are very welcome, but, you will not be eligible for a prize.  Rollerquest will donate $50 toward prize funds. Irene and Larry are ineligible for any prizes, regardless of either's overall ROLLERBLAZE standing. Should a number of women opt to participate, in the future,  we will have separate categories and will give separate prizes to men and women.

We hope the entry fees and donations will allow the prizes to be valued as such:

1st place----------$150
2nd place----------$100
3rd place----------$50

PLEASE NOTE: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE THE FASTEST SKATER TO WIN!! You just have to show up a lot and have a desire for improvement. If you participate consistently and skate hard, you will most likely accumulate enough points to be in the running. Different types of heats on different days and times cause ROLLERBLAZE to be anybody's game. The first place winner will ultimately be a well rounded skater, who is committed to ROLLERBLAZE.

The results of each heat will be posted.  They will include each skater's name, time, points, place, and current standings. (see 2007 results ).  As we move along we will highlight any personal records, achievements, milestones, etc. You may even get into "ROLLERBLAZE Hall of Flame".

HELMETS and SIGNED LIABILITY WAIVERS ARE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE! We strongly recommend wrist guards and encourage full gear.  All skaters must err on the side of safety when approaching pedestrians intersections, stop lights or stop signs, railroad tracks, hills, hairpin turns, etc. ROLLERBLAZE IS FOR FUN: IT IS NOT A RACE TO THE DEATH!  All skaters will be required to sign a seasonal liability release.

ROLLERBLAZE is in it's 4TH YEAR and we are constantly experimenting with new types of competitive training exercises to keep this fun and exciting.  Any suggestions about LOCATION AND HEAT TYPE are welcome.  You may e-mail your comments to me.
